Constant static from Kenwood turntable?
Hello,
I just bought an early-90′s Kenwood belt-driven turntable, and it is in really good shape and seems solid, but I am getting constant static when I try to play a record. I have adjusted the tone-arm weight and anti-skating wheel, cleaned the stylus, neutralized the static from the record and table itself, and done every trouble-shooting procedure I know, but no change. It is almost like the stylus is hitting the record at the wrong angle because it will skip grooves and does play the music, but through THICK static, more than just regular static build-up on the vinyl itself.
Could a dull stylus be causing this? Any suggestions?
Sounds like it probably is a worn or damaged stylus. Another thing that can happen is the rubber suspension part in the stylus can harden over time and cause poor tracking. A replacement stylus or a new cartridge if you can’t find a stylus for the old one should fix you right up. Really, it’s always a good idea to replace any stylus you’re not 100% sure is in good condition. Playing records with a worn stylus will damage them permanently.
