The preamp is just a preamp, but you'll get better sound quality than the mixer. The preamplifier amplifies only the microphone signal update line to send this message to your recording device (computer, USB audio interface, etc.) The mixer will give you a good sound too and is a mixing complete. The mixer can accept contributions more micro or an iPod or a CD and mix until it is a stereo mix. In other words, the console can do much more than the previous. If you do not need a mixer, get the preamplifier. If you plan to register more than one microphone, get the blender.
