21w pregnant, ultra sound shows extreme oligohydramnios and a ‘problem’ with the cisterna magna?
My wife is 21w pregnant. We just had a routine ultrasound and it showed extreme oligohydramnios (<2.5 percentile), and an abnormality with the cisterna magna. They didn't eloborate on the abnormality (enlarged/small/not there).
What could this be? what could have caused it? What can we do at this point
She was in the hospital at ~6w with gaul blatter problems and was given morphine for pain, and antibiotics for the infection. Could this be the cause? We were led to beleive there was little/no risk to baby.
I am very worried and anxious about everything and web searches just magnify my paranoia.
The oligohydramnios and problem with the cisterna magna are probably not caused by the antibiotics or morphine.
It is really not known exactly what causes oligohydramnios. If it is detected early in the pregnancy, we suspect problems with the fetal kidneys and/or urinary system. Because amniotic fluid is partially composed of urine from the fetus, low urine output from the fetus can contribute to oligohydramnios. I am not confident in saying that this is the case with your baby, but it is a common cause of oligohydramnios in early pregnancy.
As for the cisterna magna, it is impossible to say what might be causing the problem or determine the outcome without knowing if it is small, large or isolated.
I am sorry about your troublesome news, but try to stay positive. There is really nothing you can do at this point, as it is a waiting game. Good luck to your growing family and take care.
